Potential swimming stars usually are discovered early. Sometimes, even as a preteen, the aquatic abilities are evident and the young athlete is nurtured for high school and amateur success.
Katy Freeman did not become a competitive swimmer until she was a junior in high school. Her interest had been synchronized swimming. Now, at twenty one, she is one of the three fastest women in the world at the 100 meter breaststroke:
“… Her love of competition made Freeman decide to join her high school swim team. She attended Carondelet, where swim coach Steve Allard first noticed her talent.”Steve encouraged me to take swimming more seriously,” says Freeman. “It was something I was passionate about so I thought I’d give it a shot.”
