Your local weather still may be mild enough so that skiing is not a sport that comes to mind. In Soelden, Austria, the preparations are being put in place for the opening of the ski season for the World Cup. Competition begins October 24 on the Rettenbach glacier with some man-made snow to augment the course.
“It has become tradition: Saturday (for the women) and Sunday (for the men) Soelden, Austria opens the 2010 World Cup just as it has in eight of the last nine years and 10 times since 1996.”

On the women’s side, Hank McKee is looking for “Maze, Zettel and Poutiainen” to be contending. Lindsay Vonn, Julia Mancuso and others may disagree.
